Made in Italy

Made in Italy is a 1965 French-Italian co-production built as a comedy told through a series of short episodes rather than one continuous story. Nanni Loy directed the picture and also helped write it together with Ruggero Maccari and Ettore Scola. The film observes ordinary Italian life through separate segments covering women, work, family and how citizens deal with the state and the church, each vignette illustrating a different aspect of national character. Linking these sections together is a recurring thread about a handful of workers flying to Stockholm, whose behavior contrasts with their reserved Swedish fellow passengers. Locations range across recognizable Italian settings such as Rome, Amalfi, Matera, Naples, Venice, Turin and Florence, plus Sicily and rural areas. The large ensemble features well known performers of the era including Alberto Sordi, Lando Buzzanca, Walter Chiari and Lea Massari, alongside Milena Vukotic, Nino Castelnuovo and Lars Bloch.
