The project set out to offer a secular, contemporary reinterpretation of the evangelical texts.
The film premiered under the title Vangelo '70 at the 19th Berlin International Film Festival in 1969. Its episodes deal with love, violence and the political events of the late sixties, among them Lizzani's "Indifference", Bertolucci's "Agony", Pasolini's "The Paper Flower", Godard's "Love" and Bellocchio's "Let's Discuss, Let's Discuss". The ensemble cast includes Milena Vukotic, Nino Castelnuovo, Julian Beck, Judith Malina and Ninetto Davoli.
