Jean-Paul Belmondo — Biography
Jean-Paul Charles Belmondo was born on 9 April 1933 and died on 6 September 2021; he was a French film and stage actor who also worked as a producer and distributor from 1971 onward. His breakthrough came playing the lead in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960), which placed him at the forefront of the French New Wave. French media affectionately nicknamed him "Bébel." He built a lasting reputation for playing tough, physically fearless heroes and frequently performed his own stunts on screen. Though courted repeatedly by Hollywood, he never appeared in an English-language film. Alongside Louis de Funès and Alain Delon, he ranked among the era's biggest box-office draws, pulling in roughly 160 million admissions across a career spanning five decades. He won the César Award for Best Actor in 1989 for his role in Itinerary of a Spoiled Child. Later honors included an Honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2011 and the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at Venice in 2016; in 2017 the César Academy honored him with a special tribute.
