Weekend at Dunkirk (Week-end à Zuydcoote)
Jean-Paul Belmondo leads the cast of Weekend at Dunkirk (Week-end à Zuydcoote in French), a war drama that Henri Verneuil directed in 1964. France and Italy produced it jointly. It is adapted from Robert Merle's 1949 Goncourt-winning novel of the same name, which tells of a real event of the war. The film runs 119 minutes and StudioCanal is credited as production company.
The story follows French soldiers stranded on the Dunkirk shore in June 1940. As the army falls back before the German advance, the men wait to be evacuated by sea and face bombardment, confusion and fading hope. Alongside Belmondo are Catherine Spaak, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Pierre Mondy, François Périer, Georges Géret, Marie Dubois, Ronald Howard, Albert Rémy and Jean-Paul Roussillon, with Pierre Vernier, Pierre Collet and Alan Adair also in the cast.
Robert Merle and François Boyer wrote the screenplay. The film has gone by different titles: Dünkirchen, 2. Juni 1940 in Germany, Fin de semana en Dunkerque in Spain and La derrota gloriosa in Latin America.
