Just Before Nightfall (Juste avant la nuit)
Stéphane Audran took the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 27th British Academy Film Awards for Just Before Nightfall (Juste avant la nuit), Claude Chabrol's screen version of Edward Atiyah's 1951 novel The Thin Line. Chabrol both wrote and directed this French-Italian crime drama and psychological drama, which pairs Audran with Michel Bouquet and first opened in France on 31 March 1971.
The story centres on a married Paris advertising man whose career is going well, played by Michel Bouquet. He has accidentally caused the death of his mistress. Rather than try to cover it up, he is left alone with guilt and a wish for atonement, and in the end tries to ease his conscience by telling the truth to both his wife and the dead woman's husband. Audran plays opposite him. The cast also includes François Périer, Jean Carmet, Michel Duchaussoy, Célia, Dominique Zardi and Henri Attal.
Cinegai S.p.A. and Les Films de la Boétie made the film, with André Génovès as producer and a score by Pierre Jansen. It runs about 106 minutes and was shot in French.
