François Périer — Biography
Born François Pillu in the 16th arrondissement of Paris on 10 November 1919, he trained at the Cours Simon drama school and, under the stage name François Périer, grew into one of the defining performers of French stage and screen across a career spanning more than sixty years and well over a hundred film and television credits.
Onstage he originated the role of Hugo in the 1948 premiere of Jean-Paul Sartre's play Les Mains Sales. On film he portrayed Heurtebise in Jean Cocteau's Orphée, a police inspector in Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï, and the prosecutor in Costa-Gavras's Z. His work in René Clément's Gervaise earned him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in 1957. He also lent his voice to spoken recordings that introduced classical music to wide French audiences and narrated the French-language release of Disney's Fantasia. He was later made a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres. Périer died in Paris on 28 June 2002 at the age of 82.
