Return to Life

Made in the years just after the war, this is a five-part anthology or sketch film, with each segment helmed by a different filmmaker. Its French title translates as "Return to Life," and the screenplay across the segments is credited to Charles Spaak. The individual stories are named after their central figures — Tante Emma, Antoine, Jean, René and Louis — and were directed respectively by figures including André Cayatte, Georges Lampin, Henri-Georges Clouzot and Jean Dréville. The picture competed in the official selection at the 1949 Cannes Film Festival. Its cast draws together Louis Jouvet and Serge Reggiani alongside François Périer, Janine Darcey and Jeanne Pérez.

Unusual for French cinema of the period in bringing several directors together on one shared project, the film explores the theme of returning to ordinary life after the war through a set of separate, loosely connected character stories. Its segmented structure let multiple filmmakers of the era contribute to a single collective work rather than a single unified narrative.
