Isabelle Eberhardt

Isabelle Eberhardt is a 1991 Australian-French biographical drama directed by Ian Pringle from a screenplay by Stephen Sewell. Backed by the Film Finance Corporation Australia and produced under the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer banner, the English-language film was shot in Algiers, Paris and Geneva.

The story traces the adult life of Swiss-Russian traveler and writer Isabelle Eberhardt, who heads to North Africa after her father's death. Her journalism, clashes with French colonial authorities and attachment to the desert drive the narrative. Mathilda May stars as Eberhardt, with Peter O'Toole as General Hubert Lyautey; Tchéky Karyo and Françoise Brion also appear. Screened at the 1991 Melbourne International Film Festival, the film earned three nominations at that year's Australian Film Institute Awards but received generally negative reviews.
