Françoise Brion — Biography

One of the enduring names of French cinema and theatre, Françoise Brion — born Françoise Alicia Rose German de Ribon on 29 January 1933 in the 16th arrondissement of Paris — began acting in 1957. She became linked to the French New Wave through her lead role in Alain Robbe-Grillet's 1963 film L'Immortelle, selected for the 13th Berlin International Film Festival. She appeared in Le bel âge, Le coeur battant and Codine during the 1960s, in Rosebud and Caravan to Vaccarès in the 1970s, and in Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud in the 1990s, followed by Le Divorce in 2003. Though she was noted as never quite becoming one of French cinema's biggest stars, she worked steadily across dozens of productions, and returned to the screen after a long gap with the 2023 film She Is Conann. She was married to film critic and director Jacques Doniol-Valcroze. Françoise Brion died in Paris on 12 December 2025 at the age of 92.
