Je suis timide mais je me soigne

Movie · 1978 · 14 people

Pierre Richard directed the 1978 French comedy Je suis timide mais je me soigne (“I am shy, but I am getting treatment”). Richard also co-wrote the screenplay with Jean-Jacques Annaud and Alain Godard and plays the lead. Running about 88 minutes, the film was a commercial success in France.

Aldo Maccione and Mimi Coutelier appear in the main roles beside Richard. Jacques François, Catherine Lachens, Francis Lax, Hélène Manesse, Jacques Fabbri, Jean-Claude Massoulier, Robert Castel, Robert Dalban, André Penvern and Louis Navarre are also in the cast. The music was composed by Vladimir Cosma.

After this success Richard resumed his collaboration with Aldo Maccione the following year in a film whose Russian title means “It's not me, it's him!”. Abroad, Je suis timide mais je me soigne played under translated titles: Ich bin schüchtern, aber in Behandlung in East Germany, Sînt timid dar mă tratez in Romania, Ya robok, no ya lechus in Russia and El supertímido in Spain. Its German-language title was Und jetzt das Ganze nochmal von vorn.

Through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

A comedy that Pierre Richard directed and stars in, co-writing the script with Jean-Jacques Annaud and Alain Godard, so the tone is set start to finish by one actor-director's sensibility. For a character comedy that is both an asset and a risk: a hero built on a single trait like shyness can easily slide into variations on the same joke. Trying the partnership with Aldo Maccione again the following year suggests the pairing worked. Vladimir Cosma's score is also an important part of the rhythm in French comedies of this kind. The commercial success is plain; its cinematic ambition, in my view, is modest, and it is best watched knowing that.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The title itself carries a clue about its time: presenting shyness not as a flaw or a personality trait but as a problem to be treated suggests, to me, that the idea of solving personal troubles through therapy had become familiar enough in popular culture to be mocked. Its screenings stretching from East Germany to Romania and Russia are notable too; audiences on both sides of the Cold War laughing at the same French comedy is a small example of how humour crosses borders. Still, the film makes no claim to big social commentary, and expecting a deep portrait of the era would be a mistake.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

A light comedy directed by and starring Pierre Richard, about a shy man's troubles. That said, French comedies of the seventies can have a different sense of humour from today's family films, so it is worth checking it first before watching with young children. An easy evening for adults and teenagers, and Vladimir Cosma's music is a pleasure in itself.
