Medici: Masters of Florence (Medici)

TV Series · 2016–2019 · 3 people

Medici is an Italian-British historical drama created by Frank Spotnitz and Nicholas Meyer, following the rise of the Medici dynasty, bankers to the Pope, in fifteenth-century Florence. Each season revisits a distinct chapter of the family's story against the political and artistic landscape of Renaissance Italy.

The first season, Medici: Masters of Florence, debuted on Rai 1 on 18 October 2016, drawing a record audience for its opening episode. Set in 1429, it begins with the death of family patriarch Giovanni de' Medici; his son Cosimo takes over the family bank, the wealthiest in Europe, and fights to keep his hold on Florence while probing the mystery surrounding his father's death. Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden head the cast. The second season, Medici: The Magnificent, arrived in 2018 and leaps ahead thirty-five years to the young Lorenzo de' Medici, Cosimo's grandson, and the conspiracy Jacopo de' Pazzi weaves against the family. A third season in 2019 closed out the saga with the later years of Lorenzo's rule after the Pazzi assassination attempt. Spanning three seasons and twenty-four episodes, the series reached audiences in some 190 countries, including through Netflix.
