Movie · 2016 · 7 people

The 2016 Turkish comedy Oflu Hoca'nın Şifresi 2 was made as the sequel to Oflu Hoca'nın Şifresi. Directed by Adem Kılıç from a screenplay by Zeynep Kaya and Uğur Kandemir Arpacı, it opened in Turkish cinemas on May 13, 2016. It runs about 110 minutes, shot in color on 35 mm. It was produced by Timur Savcı, Adem Kılıç and Cemal Okan for Üçgen Yapımevi and Taff Pictures, and distributed by Mars Entertainment Group.

The story opens with Ahmet, who has lost the mayor's office and is still angry at Oflu Hoca, whom he blames for losing both his standing and his money; he is looking for a way back into office. When the wealthy contractor İdris asks for Nur's hand for his son Şaban, Ahmet agrees at once to save himself. Learning of this, Kadir and Oflu decide to kidnap Nur, but they mistakenly abduct Ahmet's aunt, and things get thoroughly tangled. Çetin Altay plays Oflu Hoca, with Ahmet Varlı as Ahmet, Eser Eyüboğlu as Kadir, Seymen Aydın as İdris and Füruzan Asena Ongan as Nur. Başak Daşman (Ümmiye), Nihan Büyükağaç (Asiye), Köksal Engür (Ali Osman), Mehtap Bayrı (Meryem), Ayşegül Günay (Emine) and İsrafil Köse (the greengrocer) complete the cast, and Yusuf Güney appears as a guest.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

At heart this is a comedy of confusion: a former mayor wanting his seat back, a marriage proposal accepted in haste, and a plan that turns into a joke when the wrong person is kidnapped. This kind of mix-up humour can bring viewers of different ages together. Since it is a sequel, though, the old scores between the characters were settled in the first film, so it is more fun to watch that one first.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The film's comedy is built on the local politics and family ties of a small place: a mayor who has lost his seat immediately agrees to Nur marrying a rich contractor's son in order to win back his standing. Though written for laughs, the setup shows a relationship familiar in many parts of Turkey: politics, construction money and marriage getting tangled together. Others deciding Nur's future, and the solution being sought in kidnapping plans, is a reminder that a woman's voice is once again in someone else's hands. This provincial satire stays comic material rather than conscious critique, but it is telling as a look at what popular comedy laughs at.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Sequels are often caught between repeating what audiences loved in the first film and building a new story, and Oflu Hoca'nın Şifresi 2 does not escape that dilemma. The structure is familiar: ambition, a marriage deal and a botched kidnapping that tangles everything beyond repair. That is a good engine for a farce, but the script loads most of the comedy onto a single misunderstanding and stretches it over more running time than a comedy can bear. In my view the large ensemble also risks scattering the main conflict among side characters. Fans of the first film will find what they want; anyone hoping for something that pushes the genre will be disappointed.
