Brother’s Keeper (Okul Tıraşı)
Ferit Karahan wrote Okul Tıraşı with Gülistan Acet and directed it himself, turning their script into a Turkish drama made in 2021. Abroad it circulated as Brother's Keeper, and in France under the title Anatolia. It had its world premiere in June 2021 within the Berlin International Film Festival, played in the main section of Tehran's 38th Fajr International Film Festival, and won the Golden Orange Award for Best Film. It reached Turkish cinemas on 17 June 2022 and German ones in late July 2023. The film runs 85 minutes.
The story takes place in a remote boys' boarding school ruled by pressure and harsh discipline. When one pupil, Memo, falls ill, his friend Yusuf cannot stay indifferent and decides to take him to a doctor. School bureaucracy, an indifferent administration, difficult terrain and snow-blocked roads all stand in his way. As teachers and students dodge responsibility, hidden truths and confrontations surface. Samet Yıldız, Ekin Koç and Mahir İpek lead the cast; Cansu Fırıncı plays the teacher Hamza and Melih Selçuk the teacher Kenan.
One critic describes the school as a cold, frozen place with the air of a barracks, and finds the children's unhappiness everywhere, from dormitory to infirmary. Far from their families and constantly scolded, they have almost nowhere to turn.
