The Blood Countess
The Blood Countess (German: Die Blutgräfin) is a 2026 vampire comedy directed by Ulrike Ottinger, who co-wrote the screenplay with Elfriede Jelinek. The film draws loosely on the legend of Elizabeth Báthory (1560–1614), the Hungarian countess convicted of murder whose story gave rise to enduring vampire mythology. Isabelle Huppert plays Báthory, with Birgit Minichmayr, Thomas Schubert, Lars Eidinger and André Jung also among the cast.
A co-production between Germany, Austria and Luxembourg, the film blends horror and comedy in Ottinger's distinctive style. It had its world premiere on 16 February 2026 in the Berlinale Special Gala section of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival.
