The River Girl

The River Girl (original title: La donna del fiume) is a 1955 French-Italian melodrama film directed by Mario Soldati. Produced under the Minerva Film banner, it stars Sophia Loren, Gérard Oury and Rik Battaglia, with Lise Bourdin, Nino Marchetti, Mimmo Palmara and Guido Celano also in the cast. The Italian-language film runs about 105 minutes.

The story unfolds in the river and marsh landscape of the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. Its dramatic core is the crisis of a young peasant woman who is abandoned by her lover after learning she is pregnant; when she reports the man to the police for his smuggling activities, the melodrama turns into a tale of revenge. Alongside Soldati, Giorgio Bassani, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Florestano Vancini also contributed to the screenplay.
