Mario Soldati directed The Stranger's Hand, a thriller drama of espionage and abduction made jointly by Britain and Italy. Its Italian title is La mano dello straniero, and French audiences know it as Rapt à Venise. Soldati read the entry and urged him to finish it as a novella that could serve as the basis for a film; Greene expanded it into a film story of about thirty pages, and Giorgio Bassani and Guy Elmes then completed the screenplay from it.
