The Rose Garden (Der Rosengarten)
The Rose Garden (Der Rosengarten in German) is a 1989 courtroom drama made as a German, Austrian and American co-production and directed by the Oscar-winning Fons Rademakers. Its screenplay, by Paul Hengge and Artur Brauner, builds on journalist Günther Schwarberg's work on the Bullenhuser Damm memorial. Brauner's CCC and the Cannon Group of Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus shared the production, and Cannon Film Distributors released it on December 22, 1989. In Spanish-speaking countries it is known as Juicio a un desconocido.
The story revolves around the case of Aaron Reichenbach, a Holocaust survivor who attacked an elderly man at Frankfurt Airport. Public defender Gabriele Schlüter-Freund takes the case, and as the defence proceeds it emerges that the victim is a former Nazi officer responsible for atrocities in the concentration camps.
Liv Ullmann, Maximilian Schell and Peter Fonda play the leads. The cast also includes Jan Niklas, Hanns Zischler, Gila Almagor (as Ruthi), Kurt Hübner and Özay Fecht. The running time is 112 minutes.
