The Double Life of Véronique (Véronique’in İkili Yaşamı)

The Double Life of Véronique (La double vie de Véronique) is a 1991 drama directed by Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski, a co-production of France, Poland and Norway. Kieślowski wrote the screenplay together with Krzysztof Piesiewicz, and the score was composed by Zbigniew Preisner. Shot in both French and Polish, it was the director's first film produced partly outside his native Poland.

The story follows two young women who have never met yet share an inexplicable bond: Weronika, a choir soprano living in Poland, and Véronique, a music teacher in France, both portrayed by Irène Jacob. When Weronika dies on stage, Véronique is overcome by a mysterious sense of loss and abandons singing. Weaving themes of identity, love and intuition in a poetic register, the film won the FIPRESCI and Ecumenical Jury prizes at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival, where Jacob also received the Best Actress award.
