Watch Out, We're Mad!

Watch Out, We're Mad! (...altrimenti ci arrabbiamo!)

Movie · 1974 · 15 people

Marcello Fondato directed Watch Out, We're Mad! (in Italian ...altrimenti ci arrabbiamo!), an action comedy made in 1974 as an Italian-Spanish production. It is the eighth of the 17 films Bud Spencer and Terence Hill made together, and counts, along with the spaghetti western They Call Me Trinity, among the duo's best-known work. In Spanish it was called Y si no, nos enfadamos, and in Germany Zwei wie Pech und Schwefel.

Two rival racing drivers win joint ownership of a red dune buggy as a race prize and cannot agree who should keep it. When the buggy is wrecked on the orders of a crooked profiteer, they demand a replacement and warn that otherwise they will get angry. The boss sends thugs after them, then a hired killer, but all are beaten up. Now genuinely furious, the two wreck the man's restaurant, and he finally has to hand each of them a new red car. Patty Shepard, John Sharp and Donald Pleasence also appear.

Shot mainly in Rome and Madrid, it was co-produced by Italy's Capital Film and Spain's Filmayer, with a score by the De Angelis brothers, known as Oliver Onions. Many of the cast are Spanish, among them Luis Barbero, Emilio Laguna and Manuel de Blas.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

The fights are at the heart of this film, but all in the playful tone of an action comedy. The setup is simple: two rivals after the car they won as a prize. Kids and grown-ups alike can follow it easily. The only warning is that every problem gets solved with fists, and there's even a hired killer in the story; it's worth reminding little ones that it's all a joke. Fine for a light family evening.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

The plot is an excuse; the real show is the duo flattening the thugs sent after them one by one. A quarrel over a red dune buggy escalating into a wrecked restaurant delivers exactly what you'd expect from this kind of film. Real tension, though, is almost nil; in my view you never believe anyone is in serious danger. There's a racing angle, but the fists are the stars. Great for easy fun, not for hard-hitting action.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Fondato's film shows the Spencer and Hill formula in almost pure form: a small injustice, a threat that boils down to "or else we'll get angry", and an escalating chain of brawls. The script barely goes beyond that escalation; the structure rests almost entirely on one fight scene after another, which limits it as cinema. On the other hand, the formula clearly clicks here; it's no accident the film counts, along with Trinity, among the duo's best-known work. The Oliver Onions score and Donald Pleasence in the cast add some colour too. But a formula is, in the end, a formula.
