Zaza Paçulia — Biography
Zaza Pachulia, born Zaur Pachulia on 10 February 1984 in Tbilisi, is a retired Georgian basketball player of Megrelian descent who later legally adopted the name Zaza; he holds both Georgian and Turkish citizenship. He began his professional career as a teenager in Turkey with Ülkerspor before being selected by the Orlando Magic in the second round, 42nd overall, of the 2003 NBA draft.
Over a 16-year NBA career, Pachulia played for seven different franchises and won two championships with the Golden State Warriors, in 2017 and 2018. During the 2011 NBA lockout he also played for Galatasaray in Turkey. He became a controversial figure after injuring Kawhi Leonard in the 2017 playoffs, an incident that led the league to introduce a rule discouraging dangerous defensive closeouts, informally dubbed the "Zaza rule".
A longtime captain of the Georgian national team, Pachulia represented his country at the EuroBasket tournaments of 2011, 2015 and 2017. After ending his playing career in 2019, he moved into a consulting role within the Golden State Warriors' basketball operations department.
