Cahide Sonku — Biography

Born Cahide Serap on 27 December 1919 in Sana'a, Yemen, Cahide Sonku trained at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory before building a career on stage and screen in Turkey. She began performing in the people's-house theatre movement and later joined the City Theatre, making her film debut in the 1933 production "Söz Bir Allah Bir" and rising to fame with "Aysel, Bataklı Damın Kızı."

After marrying actor Talat Artemel in 1937, Sonku became Turkish cinema's first female director with "Fedakâr Ana" in 1949, and the following year founded her own production company, Sonku Film, making her the country's first female film producer as well. She went on to direct titles such as "Vatan ve Namık Kemal," "Beklenen Şarkı" and "Büyük Sır," while continuing to act in films including "Kızılırmak," "Şehvet Kurbanı," "Akasya Palas" and "Senede Bir Gün."

Sonku died in Istanbul on 18 March 1981. The Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival's "Cahide Sonku Award," presented to women working in Turkish cinema, honors her legacy, and in 2026 a Netflix series based on her life was announced.
