Candan Erçetin — Biography

Born on 10 February 1963 in the Lüleburgaz district of Kırklareli to a family of Albanian and Macedonian Balkan descent, Candan Erçetin is a Turkish singer, songwriter, composer and occasional actress. She attended Galatasaray High School and received vocal training, later earning a degree in Classical Archaeology from Istanbul University. While still in her final year of school she sang "Halley" with the group Klips ve Onlar, representing Turkey at the 1986 Eurovision Song Contest, but afterward set music aside for a time to continue her archaeology studies.

She launched her solo career with the 1995 album Hazırım, followed by Çapkın (1997), which included the hit "Yalan"; Elbette (1999), the best-selling album of its year; and Neden (2002), led by the single "Gamsız Hayat". She went on to release Melek (2004), Kırık Kalpler Durağında (2009) and Milyonlarca Kuştuk... (2013). Reflecting her Balkan family roots, her music often draws on Balkan instrumentation, and she has recorded French-language material on Chante Hier Pour Aujourd'hui (2003) and Aranjman 2011 (2011), plus Greek-language songs on Aman Doktor (2005); she writes much of her own music and is known for her contralto voice.

Beyond music, Erçetin has built a varied career: she began hosting television programs in 1994, produced her own show Candan Erçetin'le Beraber ve Solo Şarkılar in 2007, and took the lead role in the musical Yıldızların Altında in 2005. She composed the scores for the films Gölgesizler (2008) and Kaptan Feza (2009), also serving as a producer on the latter, and has appeared as an actress in several films and television series. She taught music at Galatasaray High School for a period and has taught diction at Galatasaray University since 2009, and on 25 June 2013 was appointed vice chairwoman of Galatasaray S.K. by club president Ünal Aysal, alongside Ümit Özdemir. In 2014, French President François Hollande awarded her the Order of Arts and Letters for her contributions to French-Turkish relations, and in the summer of 2026 she continued performing live with her Doğu Batı Senfonisi-themed Rengâhenk concert.
