The Shadowless (Gölgesizler)
Adapted from Hasan Ali Toptaş's novel of the same name, which won the Yunus Nadi Novel Award, Gölgesizler is a 2008 Turkish psychological drama written and directed by Ümit Ünal, previously known for his debut feature 9. It was produced by Hakan Karahan through Narsist Film, a company founded to bring literary works to the screen, while Candan Erçetin composed the music for a film for the first time. Shot in 2008, the film opened in Turkey on 27 February 2009.
The story follows a barber who settles in a remote village and rents the shop of the village barber who vanished years earlier. When Güvercin, the village's most beautiful girl, disappears without a trace, the Muhtar and his watchman interrogate everyone, yet the losses mount — and the Muhtar himself never returns from a trip to seek help. The barber observes it all in cool detachment before finally leaving the village. The largely theatre-trained cast includes Selçuk Yöntem, Taner Birsel, Ertan Saban and Arsen Gürzap.
