Jacques Demy — Biography
Jacques Demy was born on 5 June 1931 in Pontchâteau and became known as a director, screenwriter and lyricist working close to the French New Wave. His visual style drew on an eclectic range of sources, from classic Hollywood musicals and fairy tales to jazz and opera, and his pictures often shared recurring characters, tied together by lush scores usually composed by Michel Legrand.
He is remembered above all for two musicals he made in the mid-1960s, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964) and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967), alongside films such as Peau d'âne and Une chambre en ville. In 1964 he won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Louis Delluc Prize, and received nominations for four Academy Awards, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. Demy died in Paris on 27 October 1990.
