Maïté Nahyr — Biography

Maïté Nahyr was a Belgian actress whose career, from the 1970s to 2000, took her through European cinema and the Paris stage. Born Nahyr Meerbergen, she is described as being of South American (Paraguayan) descent. She is best remembered for Roman Polanski's The Tenant (1976), Federico Fellini's City of Women (1980) and Leos Carax's Boy Meets Girl (1984).

Her early roles came in French cinema: she appeared in Calmos (1976), Violette et François (1977), Memoirs of a French Whore (1979) and Le Bâtard (1983). In the mid-1980s she played Sainte Ricard in Ni avec toi, ni sans toi and appeared in Les mois d'avril sont meurtriers (1987). Her film work was accompanied by stage work at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris in 1985, where she appeared in Antoine Vitez's Ubu Roi and Philippe Adrien's La Visite.

Later she took part in Le bal du gouverneur (1990), Meeting Venus (1991), Pierre Schoendoerffer's Diên Biên Phu (1992) and Cédric Klapisch's Little Nothings (1992), and played Madame Sandre in Freeway Rhapsody (2000). She died in Marseille on 19 August 2012, aged 64, of cancer.
