Al Sancak

TV Series · 2023 · 4 people

Action, military themes and drama come together in Al Sancak, a Turkish television series from Bozdağ Film. It began on TRT 1 on 19 January 2023 and follows a special-operations team as it goes after a large network supplying arms and money to armed organisations. The title means "red banner", and the series had a single season.

In the story, team commander Captain Ali gathers his unit after a sudden piece of intelligence. According to information from a suspicious source, a very important meeting will take place on an island abroad, where the arms network will meet the ringleaders. If the operation succeeds, it will remove a national security threat to Türkiye and bring the team a step closer to the killers of Captain Atilla, who was recently martyred. The fighting is fierce and the enemy far more numerous than expected; Ali comes face to face with Nadia, a mysterious arms dealer, an encounter that sets him on a very difficult path. Uğur Güneş and Gülsim Ali share the leads, with İdris Nebi Taşkan and Ahmet Yenilmez also in the cast.

Can Emre directed first, and Günay Günaydın took over later. The scripts are by Atilla Engin, Mehmet Arı and Selman Kılıçaslan. It ended with its 19th episode on 15 June 2023.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Al Sancak gets straight down to business: a special-operations team, an island abroad and an enemy far bigger than expected. The firefights are the show's real fuel, and the pace holds up in most episodes. Nadia, the mysterious arms dealer, adds a hook of her own. If military action is your thing, the opening episodes will grab you fast, though the drama side cuts in now and then and slows things down.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

One season, 19 episodes: Al Sancak never became a long runner, and that brevity cuts both ways. The story opens with a clear goal; Captain Ali's team is chasing a big arms network while also trying to reach the killers of the fallen Captain Atilla. That motive gives the characters weight from the start, and Ali's encounter with Nadia becomes the show's most intriguing thread. Even so, the operations start to look alike in the middle stretch, and with the director changing along the way the tone seems to wobble a little. The characters never quite get the time to deepen.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

This series is built around combat. Gunfights, news of fallen soldiers and storylines about armed organisations come up again and again. I would not watch it with young children. For older teens and adults, it offers a story about country, sacrifice and teamwork. If the family is watching after dinner, keep the younger ones in mind when the rough scenes come.
