Doberman (Dobermann) (translated)

This French crime action film, directed by Jan Kounen and released in 1997, adapts Joël Houssin's series of police novels, with Houssin himself writing the screenplay. The story follows Yann, known as Dobermann, who leads a crew of professional robbers specializing in bank and armored-truck heists. Driven as much by the adrenaline rush as by the money, the gang includes Nat, Dobermann's deaf muse; her brother Manu; Pitt Bull, who raids luxury boutiques with an axe; the hot-tempered Moustique; Sonia; and others. When Dobermann begins planning an ambitious new bank job, Commissioner Sauveur Cristini, a sadistic and obsessive policeman, throws aside regulations and paperwork, takes Inspector Baumann with him, and launches a relentless pursuit. As brutal as the criminals he hunts, Cristini will stop at nothing to kill Dobermann. Starring Vincent Cassel, Tchéky Karyo and Monica Bellucci, the film became known for its extreme violence and dark humor.
