Fack ju Göhte 2

Movie · 2015 · 15 people

Bora Dağtekin wrote and directed Fack ju Göhte 2, a German comedy from 2015. Produced by Constantin Film, it is the sequel to the surprise 2013 hit Fack ju Göhte and the second film in the series. Its title deliberately misspells "Fuck you, Goethe". Running about 115 minutes, it drew more than 7.7 million viewers and was the most successful German film of 2015 and, across all releases, trailed only Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It won the German Film Award for the film with the most viewers.

This time the story moves to Thailand. Zeki Müller, a teacher with a criminal past, takes his students abroad to set up a partnership with a local school and lift their own school's ranking. His own hunt for buried treasure keeps derailing the trip. The leads are Elyas M'Barek, Karoline Herfurth and Jella Haase, familiar from the first film, with Max von der Groeben and Volker Bruch in supporting roles. The cast also includes Katja Riemann, Lucas Reiber, Anna Lena Klenke, Gizem Emre, Jana Pallaske, Alwara Höfels, Uschi Glas and Bernd Stegemann.

The film premiered in Munich on 7 September 2015 and opened in German-speaking cinemas three days later, on 10 September. In the United States it was released as Suck Me Shakespeer 2.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

It is a teen comedy set around a school, but even its title rests on a deliberately misspelled swear word, which hints at the tone of the humour. It can be a fun watch with teenagers. With younger children, it is better to ask someone who knows the film or to check it yourself first. The trip to Thailand and the teacher chasing treasure make for a light, playful frame.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

The familiar sequel recipe: take characters who worked the first time and move them to a more exotic location. The relocation to Thailand and the buried-treasure subplot scatter the humour, which in the first film grew out of friction inside the school, rather than expanding it; the back-and-forth between the school trip and the treasure hunt leaves the story caught between two films. Still, with Dağtekin both writing and directing, the tone stays consistent, and continuity with the first film's cast gives audiences familiar ground. Over seven million admissions clearly prove the formula works commercially; artistically, it does not repeat the first film's surprise.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The film puts the race for school rankings at the heart of its comedy: partnering with a school abroad becomes a matter of points rather than education. Having a teacher with a criminal past as the hero also reflects a sceptical view of authority and institutions. Its status as the year's most-watched domestic film in Germany shows that this irreverent but endearing school world spoke to a wide audience. Yet the film does not deepen what it says about the education system; the critique stays in the background of the jokes.
