My Only Sunshine (Hayat Var)

Hayat Var (My Only Sunshine) is a 2008 Turkish drama film written and directed by Reha Erdem, released in Turkey on 27 March 2009. It follows Hayat, a teenage girl living in a wooden house by a stream opening into the Bosphorus with her bedridden grandfather and neglectful father, as she confronts life's hardships.

Every morning Hayat rows to school in the boat her father drives, waiting at dusk for his return; his illegal side jobs, her grandfather's grave illness, and her remarried mother all weigh on her, yet she never loses her courage or hope. Starring Elit İşcan, Erdal Beşikçioğlu and Levend Yılmaz, the roughly two-hour film is regarded as one of the most significant works of Reha Erdem's filmography and of recent Turkish cinema.
