Twin Peaks
Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, the American series Twin Peaks fuses detective fiction, mystery, horror and soap-opera melodrama in a surrealist register. It premiered on ABC on April 8, 1990, and ran for two seasons until June 10, 1991. The pilot drew 8.15 million viewers. Schedule changes and waning interest after the killer was named cost the second season much of its audience.
The story unfolds in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, in Washington state. When the body of high school student Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) is discovered, FBI special agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) arrives to lead the inquiry. His investigation uncovers a web of lies, violence and drugs beneath the town's peaceful surface, and from the second season supernatural elements move steadily to the foreground. Eccentric locals and dreamlike imagery became its trademarks. Angelo Badalamenti composed the music together with Lynch.
Exteriors were shot mostly in Snoqualmie and North Bend. It won a Golden Globe, Emmys and a Peabody Award, and is regarded as a landmark turning point in television drama. In 1992 Lynch directed Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, a film about Laura's final days. An eighteen-part third season aired on Showtime in 2017, every episode directed by Lynch.
