Ishq

Ishq is a 1997 Indian film. Shot in Hindi, it's a masala (a Turkish fairy tale) that blends drama, romance, action, and comedy. Indra Kumar directed it, and the music was composed by Anu Malik. The story largely takes place in and around Mumbai.

At the heart of the film is the bond formed between the children of two wealthy businessmen who look down on the poor, and two young people from the working class. While the families devise a marriage plan, the young people's hearts wander in completely different directions. The fathers' attempts to break up this union, first with money, then with threats and intrigue, culminate in a deepening crisis of trust fueled by forged photographs and false testimonies. The four young people's efforts to expose the deception carry over the second half of the film, and the story concludes with the acceptance that true wealth lies not in possessions, but in children.

The film stars Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgan, Juhi Chawla, and Kajol in leading roles; Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Dalip Tahil, Johnny Lever, and Mohan Joshi have supporting roles. A strong box office success, it became the third highest-grossing Hindi-language film of 1997; while it received praise for its humor, music, and acting, its screenplay was criticized. Amrapurkar was nominated for a Filmfare Award for his role.
