Kefaret

TV Series · 2020–2021 · 7 people

Said to be adapted from Zülfü Livaneli's novel Konstantiniyye Oteli, the Turkish drama series Kefaret was made by 25 Film and began on NOW with its first episode on 22 November 2020. It ran for a single season and ended with its 35th episode on 29 July 2021.

The story centres on Zeynep, a music teacher. When she moves with her doctor husband Ahmet and their two young children into a beautiful home in a town where they have just been posted, she is certain the future will be as perfect as that summer morning, and she even makes a birthday wish. Over the next five years, however, she loses everything. Commissioner Sinan never leaves her side and loses his job because of his great love for her. Zeynep tries one last way to get back what she lost and, hand in hand with Sinan, stubbornly sets about winning it all back, one thing after another.

Nurgül Yeşilçay, Mert Fırat and Yurdaer Okur share the lead roles. The cast also lists Özge Özacar, Ege Kökenli, Mine Kılıç, Ayşegül Cengiz Akman, Ayşe Tunaboylu, Hakan Yufkacıgil and Tolga Güleç. Mesude Erarslan directed and Mahinur Ergun wrote the script.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

With a single season of 35 episodes, Kefaret is a manageable length to work through. The journey of music teacher Zeynep, from a summer morning that seems perfect to losing everything within five years, carries a heavy emotional charge. The leads shared by Nurgül Yeşilçay, Mert Fırat and Yurdaer Okur are what really hold the show up. Commissioner Sinan never leaving Zeynep's side adds a warm thread too. But as the losses pile up, the pain sometimes gets too concentrated, and in the middle episodes the show seems to repeat itself. For drama lovers it's still gripping.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Said to be adapted from Zülfü Livaneli's novel Konstantiniyye Oteli, Kefaret makes a start that will appeal to anyone looking for a story with literary roots. A music teacher believing, in the lovely house she has moved into with her family, that the future will be perfect, and making a birthday wish, recalls the innocent hope of the old melodramas. The five years of loss that follow are hard going. Experienced actors such as Nurgül Yeşilçay, Mert Fırat and Yurdaer Okur give the story weight. Still, sorrow heaped this high may at times be too much for an eye used to the measured grief of the classics.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Kefaret is a heavy drama about a woman who loses everything and fights to win it back. With its story of loss and pain, it isn't suitable for children. Adults, especially those who like emotional family dramas, may find it moving. But on an evening when you're already feeling low it can wear you out, so taking breaks helps.
