The Queen (Kraliçe)

TV Series · 2023 · 15 people

Kanal D brought Kraliçe (The Queen), a Turkish drama series, to viewers on March 22, 2023. Made under the Mednova banner, it is the Turkish adaptation of the American series Queen Sugar, and Warner Bros. International Television Production is also among the producers. Directed by Cevdet Mercan and Serhan Şahin, the show ran for a single season and ended with its 11th episode on June 7, 2023.

The story opens when Ateş, a famous basketball player, is caught up in a sex scandal and the life he shares with his wife Deniz collapses overnight. Just then Deniz also loses her beloved father. Meeting her estranged siblings again at the funeral, she learns that he had been in serious financial trouble. Deniz takes her daughter to her father's village, where she struggles both to keep the family farm going and to get past her husband's betrayal. Ateş, for his part, fights to prove his innocence and to win back the affection of his wife and daughter.

The leading roles go to Burcu Özberk, Gökhan Alkan, Selin Şekerci and Özgün Karaman, with Gökhan Alkan playing Ateş Akça. Abroad, a version dubbed into Arabic in the Syrian dialect aired on MBC 4, and a Persian-dubbed one on MBC Persia.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Kraliçe opens a lot of stories at once: a famous athlete's scandal, the loss of a father, estranged siblings, a farm sunk in debt. That is the skeleton of a long-running family drama, yet the show wrapped up after one short season. In my view the brevity cuts both ways: it leaves no room for the sagging middle stretches so common in Turkish series, but it also leaves the siblings little space to grow. Deniz's reckoning with her husband and her reconnection with her siblings carry the weight of two separate shows, and which thread hooks you decides what you get out of it.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Kraliçe adapts the American series Queen Sugar, and the interesting question is how family land and inheritance translate into a Turkish setting. A woman who lives in the city as a famous athlete's wife going back to the village to keep her father's indebted farm afloat sets up a journey in the opposite direction, from city to countryside. That reversal of the usual village-to-city migration story of Turkish television is worth noticing. The burden of keeping the land going falling on a woman's shoulders is the show's strongest social vein. Its broadcast in Arabic and Persian dubs on regional channels also suggests that inheritance and family conflict travel easily across borders.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

The story starts from a sex scandal and a betrayal in a marriage, so it is not a good pick for watching with young children. Teenagers can watch with their parents, though some topics may need talking through. The siblings coming back together, the bond with the father and the effort to save the family farm can still give adults and teens a warm sense of family.
