Malazgirt 1071
Malazgirt 1071 is a Turkish historical action and war film that dramatizes the 1071 Battle of Manzikert between the Seljuks and the Byzantines, together with the events leading up to it. Shot in 2019, its release was postponed because of the pandemic, and it finally premiered on 11 February 2022. Initially announced under the title "Malazgirt 1071: Bizans'ın Kıyameti," the film was directed by Özgür Bakar and Bilal Kalyoncu, with Alper Kıvılcım joining them on the screenplay.
The story centers on Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan, who seeks to make Anatolia a homeland for the Turks, and Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes, who is determined to drive them out. Their confrontation culminates in the great clash on the plain of Manzikert, presented as the starting point of the Turkish presence in Anatolia. Cengiz Coşkun plays Alp Arslan and Caner Kurtaran portrays Romanos Diogenes, while the cast also includes Vildan Atasever, Haluk Piyes, and Hasan Küçükçetin as Nizam al-Mulk. The film received largely negative responses from critics and audiences alike.
