The Lovers of Montparnasse (Montparnasse 19)

Movie · 1958–1961 · 2 people

Montparnasse 19 (original title: Les Amants de Montparnasse) is a 1958 French-Italian black-and-white biographical drama. The project was begun by Max Ophüls, but after his death Jacques Becker took over the direction and dedicated the film to him in the credits. The screenplay, adapted by Becker and Henri Jeanson, is based on Michel-Georges Michel's novel Les Montparnos.

Set in Paris in 1919, the film portrays the last year of the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, who lived and died in abject poverty in the Montparnasse district; unappreciated in his lifetime, he succumbed to tubercular meningitis at 35. Gérard Philipe stars as Modigliani, alongside Lilli Palmer, Anouk Aimée, Lino Ventura and Lila Kedrova.
