Grandma (Nine) (translated)

Nine is a 2009 American-Italian musical drama directed and co-produced by Rob Marshall, adapted from the 1982 Broadway musical that was itself inspired by Federico Fellini's 8½. The screenplay by Michael Tolkin and Anthony Minghella follows Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), a celebrated film director in the grip of a midlife crisis whose creativity is drying up just as he must finish his latest picture. As he struggles to work, he juggles the women crowding his life: his wife Luisa, his mistress Carla, his muse Claudia, his confidante and costume designer Lilliane, an American journalist named Stephanie, Saraghina from his childhood, and the memory of his mother. The ensemble cast features Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Fergie and Sophia Loren, with songs by Maury Yeston. Although the film drew mixed reviews and fared poorly at the box office, the acting, especially Cotillard's performance, was widely praised, and it earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Cruz.
