Operation Sabre

Operation Sabre (Sablja)

TV Series · 2024 · 15 people

Operation Sabre (original Serbian title Sablja) is a one-season, eight-episode Serbian political drama and historical crime miniseries from 2024. It tells of Belgrade in 2003, after the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić throws the country into turmoil, and of the police operation of the same name that followed. A Serbian-German-Bulgarian co-production, its episodes run between 44 and 65 minutes.

The story is seen through a journalist, a police officer and a criminal, and frequent flashbacks shed light on Serbia's political period from 2000 to 2003 and on the investigation into the part played by the Zemun clan and the Special Operations Unit. The cast includes Dragan Mićanović, Izudin Bajrović, Sergej Trifunović, Jasna Đuričić, Ljubomir Bandović, Milica Gojković, Tihana Lazović, Marko Grabež and Marko Marković.

Goran Stanković and Vladimir Tagić directed it and wrote the script with Maja Pelević, with whom they had earlier worked on the RTS series Jutro će promeniti sve. The broadcast planned for 24 February 2024 was postponed so that the series could enter festivals. Its first two episodes were shown at Canneseries, where the entire cast won an award for ensemble acting, and the regional premiere took place at the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival. It aired on RTS 1 from 2 to 24 November 2024.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

For an eight-episode miniseries, Operation Sabre builds a fairly ambitious structure: it tells the story through the eyes of a journalist, a police officer and a criminal, and keeps cutting back in time. That design saves the characters from being one-note, and the whole cast sharing an ensemble award at Canneseries says a lot about how well they play together. A word of warning: the time jumps and the large cast make the early episodes demanding, so this is not one to leave running in the background. On the plus side, a short season leaves little room for the saggy middle that longer shows so often fall into.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The series takes on the 2003 assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić and the police operation that followed, so it is dealing with real and recent history. What makes it interesting is that it does not stop at the event itself but reaches back into the political climate of 2000 to 2003 and the part played by the Zemun clan and the Special Operations Unit. The assassination becomes less a whodunit than a mirror of the ties between the state, organised crime and the security apparatus. Viewers who don't know Serbia's recent history may find some of the connections dense, but it is a seriously constructed story that makes you want to learn more about the period.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

An assassination, a secret operation, a mafia clan: on paper it is a full thriller package. Just don't mistake it for a straight action series. The many flashbacks and the investigation-driven storytelling keep breaking the momentum, and there is more talking and connecting the dots than chasing. If you like political thrillers and crime drama, the eight episodes will fly by; if you want shootouts and speed, it can feel heavy in places.
