Paul

Paul is a 1969 French film, the only feature ever made by sculptor Diourka Medveczky. Conceived as a poetic, burlesque tale, it brings together Jean-Pierre Léaud, one of the most recognizable faces of the French New Wave, and Bernadette Lafont, with Jean-Pierre Kalfon, Béatrice Costantini and Léonie Lousseau also in the ensemble. Shooting took place mostly in the Cévennes mountains, above all in the Gard village of Saint-André-de-Valborgne, while further scenes were filmed on a Paris street, in the Bois de Boulogne, at Fresne-Léguillon in the Oise and on the Île-aux-Moines off the Morbihan coast. Medveczky's background in the visual arts lends the picture an unusual pictorial sensibility, and Paul endures as a singular, rarely screened curiosity of late-1960s French cinema.
