Movie · 2017 · 6 people

Recep İvedik 5 is the fifth cinema outing for the character Recep İvedik, played by Şahan Gökbakar. The comedy, directed by Togan Gökbakar and written by him with Şahan Gökbakar, opened on 16 February 2017 and returned to cinemas on 23 June 2017. It also has elements of an adventure and sports film. Running about an hour and fifty minutes, roughly 7.4 million people saw it in Turkey and it grossed more than 85.9 million lira, placing it among the country's most-watched and highest-grossing films.

The story starts with the death of İsmet, a driver Recep knows from the neighbourhood. At the condolence visit Recep decides to take over the unfinished job: escorting national athletes to their competitions. He drives the team to Skopje, but when the athletes fall ill he has to compete for Turkey himself in sports such as athletics, boxing and wrestling. Orkan Varan (Akif) and Deniz Ceylan (head of delegation) join Şahan Gökbakar, with Hüseyin Baycur, Murat Ormıyak, Murat Bölücek and Nurullah Çelebi also in the cast.

Filming took place in Istanbul, Antalya and Skopje. Çamaşırhane Film produced it, with music by Ömer Özgür and cinematography by Gérard Simon and Gürol Beşer; Mars Entertainment Group distributed it.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Recep İvedik films usually have the whole house laughing, but this one isn't for every age either. The character's coarse language and gestures are no good example for small children. Teenagers and adults will laugh plenty at the scrapes he gets into in athletics, boxing and wrestling. Don't look for an emotional message; the film is made purely to get laughs. With teenagers, and an adult in the room, it's an easy watch.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

By the fifth instalment the series can do little more than repeat its own formula. The story, which opens with İsmet's death, is mostly a pretext for putting Recep in charge of a team of athletes and getting him to Skopje; the real structure is a string of sketches running from athletics to wrestling. Togan Gökbakar stages things tidily and the scenes shot abroad open up the frame a little, but at about an hour and fifty minutes the running time strains under such a thin plot. Şahan Gökbakar has complete command of the character's physical comedy, yet five films in the character has not changed at all, so the element of surprise is gone. Some 7.4 million admissions show the formula still sells; as cinema, though, the series is treading water.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

The sports angle adds some movement: athletics, boxing, wrestling, and Recep is thrown into something in nearly every scene. Still, don't expect tension or a real contest; the competitions are pure gag material. The pace works in the first half, then slides into the same jokes on repeat. Fine for switching off with friends, not if you want sports-movie thrills.
