Recep İvedik 6

Movie · 2019 · 7 people

The sixth big-screen outing of the Recep İvedik character played by Şahan Gökbakar, Recep İvedik 6 dates from 2019 and belongs to Turkish comedy. The series began in 2008, with the second film in 2009, the third in 2010, the fourth in early 2014 and the fifth in 2017. Produced by Çamaşırhane Film, the sixth installment opened on November 8, 2019 and drew around 3.99 million admissions, grossing more than 67.7 million Turkish lira.

At the start, Recep is watching television at home when the postman delivers an invitation that thrills him. The Kara Ambar Kamyoncular Derneği, a truckers' association he belongs to, is calling him to a dried-bean festival in Konya. Recep wants to set off with his closest friend Nurullah, but the travel agency run by Nurullah's nephew makes a mistake and the pair end up in Kenya instead of Konya. With the sole aim of getting back to Türkiye, the two lose their way on the African savannah and unknowingly land in the middle of a war between two hostile local tribes. As they try to deal with the wild surroundings in their own fashion, one comic mishap follows another.

Togan Gökbakar directed, and he wrote the screenplay together with Şahan Gökbakar. The leads are Şahan Gökbakar and Nurullah Çelebi.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

We know kids love the Recep İvedik films. In the sixth one, Recep and Nurullah end up in Kenya instead of Konya, and the laughs come one after another. But Recep's rough-edged manner is still the centre of the film, and young children may copy the way he talks straight away. Landing in the middle of a war between two tribes may also unsettle little ones. Fine as a light evening with teenagers; stay close if younger kids are watching.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

By its sixth outing the series can no longer get past repeating its own formula. A travel agency mixing up Konya and Kenya works as a one-line gag, but it is not a dramatic spine strong enough to carry a whole film. Once the script drops the pair on the African savannah, it moves forward through a string of sketches rather than any real structure. Togan Gökbakar's direction is competent and tidy; Şahan Gökbakar is as much in command of the character's rhythm as ever, and his chemistry with Nurullah Çelebi is the film's strongest asset. Still, a new location is not the same thing as a new idea. Close to 4 million admissions prove the strength of the brand, not a cinematic renewal.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The film's starting point comes from a very particular slice of Anatolia: a truckers' association and a dried-bean festival in Konya. That local world could have been the warmest material for its humour, yet the story soon leaves it behind and moves to Kenya. Portraying Africa through two hostile tribes is a choice open to debate. Equating a foreign land with wilderness and conflict risks reproducing an old exoticising gaze. Exaggeration is natural in comedy, but when the other society is given a voice of its own, a cross-cultural encounter becomes a far more meaningful kind of comedy.
