Sarfarosh
Sarfarosh is a 1999 Hindi-language action thriller written, produced, and directed by John Matthew Matthan. Matthan began the project in 1992 as a personal revenge story, but after the 1993 Mumbai bombings came to light, the script grew out of years of research into how Pakistan-backed terror networks operated inside India.
The film follows IPS officer Ajay Singh Rathod, who sets out to dismantle arms smuggling and cross-border terrorism. As his investigation deepens, he is forced to confront the dark connections hidden behind a beloved and respected singer, a reckoning that becomes entangled with his own past. Aamir Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Sonali Bendre play the principal roles.
Released on 30 April 1999, just as India-Pakistan tensions were escalating toward the Kargil conflict, the film was a commercial success and earned praise for its performances and music. It won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film, and was later remade in Kannada and Telugu.
