Defense (Savunma) (translated)
Osman F. Seden directed Savunma ("Defense"), a 1986 Turkish film mixing crime, drama and thriller with romance. Erdoğan Tünaş wrote the screenplay, Türker İnanoğlu produced it for Erler Film, and Çetin Gürtop shot it. Shot on 35 mm colour, it runs 88 minutes. Gülşen Bubikoğlu, Kenan Kalav and Fikret Hakan share the leads.
The story begins with Çiğdem (Merih Akalın), a wealthy businesswoman married to the younger Cengiz (Kenan Kalav). Her marriage is failing, her husband is unfaithful, and threatening calls and letters reach her home. She wants to leave, but Cengiz refuses. On the night he travels to Ankara on business, Çiğdem is killed. Chief inspector Cemal (Fikret Hakan) leads the inquiry and suspects Cengiz, arresting him on the claim that he raced back by taxi to commit the murder. Handan (Gülşen Bubikoğlu) takes on Cengiz's defence and wins his acquittal for lack of evidence. A passionate bond grows between them.
Cemal persists: he finds the taxi driver who brought Cengiz back to Istanbul and calls him to court as a witness. Learning she was lied to, Handan withdraws from the case, though her feelings win out. The rest turns on trust, suspicion and danger between lawyer and client. Erol Günaydın (Detective Rıza) and Nazan Ayas appear in supporting roles.
