La Dolce Vita (Tatlı Hayat)

Movie · 1960–1961 · 2 people

Federico Fellini's 1960 French-Italian co-production La Dolce Vita follows Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), a journalist writing gossip columns for a Rome tabloid, over the course of seven days and nights. Drifting from one party to the next in pursuit of stories about the rich and famous, he moves through the glittering high society of postwar Rome while searching in vain for love and happiness. Among the film's most celebrated moments is his encounter with Hollywood star Sylvia (Anita Ekberg), crowned by the famous scene in the Trevi Fountain. Beneath the surface glamour, the endless rounds of drinking and nightlife gradually wear Marcello down, leaving him lonelier and emptier. The photographer character Paparazzo, played by Walter Santesso, gave the world the word 'paparazzi.' The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for costume design, becoming a worldwide commercial hit despite being banned in some countries. Widely regarded as a turning point in Fellini's career and a masterpiece of Italian cinema, it marked his shift from neorealism toward a more personal, symbolic style.
