The Libertine

The Libertine (original title: La matriarca) is a 1968 Italian sex comedy directed by Pasquale Festa Campanile and starring Catherine Spaak and Jean-Louis Trintignant. The story centers on a young widow who learns that her late husband kept a hidden apartment where he indulged in unconventional sexual encounters with other women. Shaken yet intrigued by the revelation, she decides to take over the same apartment and use it to explore her own desires with different men. Blending eroticism with the conventions of Italian comedy of the era, the film treats female emancipation and sexual hypocrisy with a playful, satirical tone. It was produced by Clesi Cinematografica.
