The Way Back (film, 2010)

The Way Back (known in Turkish as Özgürlük Yolu) is a 2010 American-Polish-Emirati survival drama directed by Peter Weir from a screenplay he co-wrote with Keith Clarke. The film is loosely inspired by The Long Walk (1956), the controversial memoir of Polish prisoner of war Sławomir Rawicz, who claimed to have escaped a Soviet gulag during World War II and walked roughly 6,400 kilometers to freedom. Weir reportedly decided to make the film after watching a BBC documentary about the book's story.

The plot follows Janusz, a Polish officer accused of espionage and sent to a Siberian labor camp, who escapes with prisoners of various nationalities and treks through Mongolia and the Gobi Desert toward British India. Starring Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, and Saoirse Ronan, the film was shot in Bulgaria, Morocco, and India, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup, and stands as Weir's final feature to date.
