The Wolves

The Wolves, originally Uomini e lupi, is a 1956 Italian neorealist drama directed by Giuseppe De Santis and Leopoldo Savona, with a screenplay credited to Tonino Guerra, Gianni Puccini and De Santis. Produced by Titanus as an Italian-French co-production, it was shot entirely in the Abruzzo region, particularly in the villages of Scanno and Pescasseroli, during the severe cold and snow wave that struck Europe in February 1956 and is still remembered in Italy.

The story follows two hunters who hope to collect a bounty for every wolf they kill; when one of them becomes drawn to the other's wife, Teresa, the tension between them turns tragic. Silvana Mangano, Yves Montand and Pedro Armendáriz star, alongside Irene Cefaro and Guido Celano. Running about 102 minutes, the film's poor rural setting and man-versus-nature conflict reflect the realist Italian cinema of its era.
