This Angry Age
This Angry Age is a 1957 drama film directed by René Clément, who co-wrote the screenplay with Irwin Shaw. A co-production between France, Italy, and the United States, it was the first screen adaptation of Marguerite Duras's 1950 novel The Sea Wall, released in Italy as La diga sul Pacifico and in France as Barrage contre le Pacifique. Dino De Laurentiis produced the film.
Set in French-colonized Asia, the story follows two young siblings living with their widowed mother on a barren rice plantation, seeking escape from her oppressive control through their own love affairs. The principal cast includes Anthony Perkins, Silvana Mangano, Richard Conte, Jo Van Fleet, and Alida Valli. Filmed in Thailand and at Rome's Cinecittà studios, the picture displeased Duras, whose novel was adapted again in 2008 by Rithy Panh.
