Fatma Karanfil — Biography

Fatma Karanfil (February 3, 1952, Eskişehir – June 4, 2024, Istanbul) was a Turkish theatre, film and television actress. She trained in acting on a scholarship at the Language and Culture Center, where her teachers included Muhsin Ertuğrul, Haldun Taner and Ayla-Beklan Algan. In 1968 she placed third in the Ses magazine talent contest and entered cinema; the İzmir Journalists Association named her "Artist of the Year" that same year, and she received the same honour from the Ankara Journalists Association in 1972.

She became known through Yeşilçam films such as Fosforlu Cevriyem (1969) and Adını Anmayacağım (1971). Between 1976 and 1980 she studied textiles in London; after overcoming breast cancer she returned to the stage in 2001. Her role as Şayeste in the series Aşk-ı Memnu (2008–2010) introduced her to a new audience, and she also appeared in the films Selam (2013) and Bizi Hatırla (2018). She died in Istanbul on June 4, 2024, aged 72.
