Jean Gruault — Biography

Jean Gruault was born in Fontenay-sous-Bois on 3 August 1924 and became a writer closely associated with the founding directors of the French New Wave, working as a screenwriter alongside François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette. Between 1960 and 1995 he scripted twenty-five films, among them Truffaut's Jules et Jim, The Wild Child and The Story of Adele H. His screenplay for the 1980 film My American Uncle earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He also acted on occasion, appearing in films such as Le Beau Serge and Vanina Vanini, and took part in the documentary François Truffaut: Stolen Portraits. Jean Gruault died in Paris on 8 June 2015.
