Movie · 1983 · 10 people

Italy and France joined forces in 1983 for 2019, After the Fall of New York (Italian: 2019 - Dopo la caduta di New York), an Italian-French action and science-fiction film set in a post-nuclear world. Sergio Martino directed it and co-wrote the script; he also worked under the pseudonym "Martin Dolman". The film was made under the influence of John Carpenter's Escape from New York and was released in Italy by Medusa Film on 22 July 1983. It is remembered as one of the Italian entries in that vein.

The story begins twenty years after a nuclear catastrophe. Radioactive fallout has left humanity sterile, and the survivors are divided between the Eurak society and the rebel Federation. The Federation assigns a mercenary named Parsifal (Michael Sopkiw) to find and rescue the last fertile woman on Earth. She is in the Euraks' hands, so Parsifal must slip unnoticed into the ruins of New York. The cast includes Valentine Monnier, Anna Kanakis, George Eastman and Edmund Purdom, along with Romano Puppo, Paolo Maria Scalondro and Serge Feuillard.

Luciano Martino produced the film and Guido De Angelis wrote the music; it runs about 91 minutes. Ernesto Gastaldi is also credited on the script.

Through different eyes

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A ruined New York after a nuclear disaster, a mercenary who has to slip in unseen, and the last fertile woman on Earth: the setup is a textbook genre recipe. The mission-driven structure keeps the story on target. If you like eighties Italian post-apocalypse films, it promises a fun night; set it against today's big-budget action, though, and the sets and effects may look modest.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

The film was made under the influence of John Carpenter's Escape from New York, and that influence can be felt at every step. It is a typical product of Italian genre cinema's habit at the time of quickly reworking successful foreign films for its own market. Sergio Martino also working under the pseudonym 'Martin Dolman' sums up the identity of an industry shaped for the international market. Ernesto Gastaldi's credit on the script points to an experienced genre team. But for anyone seeking an original vision, the film never steps out of its model's shadow, and the depth promised by naming the hero Parsifal, with its mythic echo, is not really delivered, in my view.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The film's post-apocalyptic world directly reflects the fear of nuclear war in the early eighties. The idea that radiation has left humanity sterile is striking because it imagines catastrophe not just as destruction but as the loss of the future itself. The split of survivors into the Eurak society and the rebel Federation can also be read as an echo of a world seen as divided into blocs. Yet instead of deepening these ideas, the film uses them as a backdrop for adventure, and reducing the last fertile woman to a target to be rescued looks far too narrow from today's vantage point.
